The source has been detected acoustically. The animal has not been definitively photographed or visually identified.
Researchers reported one source per season with these characteristics, supporting the interpretation that the records followed an individual animal.
Blue whale, fin whale, hybrid, or an individual with an anatomical difference have all been discussed. No visual identification has settled the question.
The recordings do not reveal an animal's emotional state. “The loneliest whale” is a powerful human interpretation, not a diagnosis.

Shipping, sonar, construction, and industrial activity add sound to the ocean. Researchers study when this noise masks calls or changes whale behavior.
Listening does not require approaching or disturbing an animal. Passive acoustic monitoring is therefore central to any responsible search strategy.
